13 Unusual August Holidays

August might seem like just another summer month, but it’s packed with some of the most unique and fun holidays that you probably never knew existed! Here’s a rundown of these unusual August holidays that offer a perfect excuse to celebrate and break the routine.

August 1: National Girlfriends Day

Celebrate the amazing women in your life on National Girlfriends Day. It’s the perfect day to catch up, share laughs, and strengthen bonds. Why not plan a girls’ night out or a cozy get-together at home? And if you’re thinking of a special gift for your BFF, check out Gifts as Special as Your BFF: 5 Unique Ways to Say Thank You.

August 2: Dinosaurs Day and National Coloring Book Day

Why not combine the best of both worlds on August 2 by celebrating Dinosaurs Day and National Coloring Book Day together? It’s the perfect opportunity to let your inner child run wild with creative fun and prehistoric fascination. Grab a dinosaur-themed coloring book and get lost in a world of ancient giants while adding your own splash of color. You can also organize a dino-themed coloring party with friends or family, complete with dinosaur-shaped snacks and fun facts about these incredible creatures. It’s a wonderful way to relax, bond, and celebrate the wonder of dinosaurs and the joy of coloring.

And if you need some fun dinosaur printable pages, I’ve got you covered. Go grab the Printable Dinosaur Activity Bundle for hours of fun for your dino loving kid. Or for yourself cuz you’re never to old to enjoy dinosaurs and coloring.

August 3: National Watermelon Day

Celebrate the peak of summer with juicy and refreshing watermelon on National Watermelon Day. Whether you enjoy it as a snack, in salads, or as a drink, this day is all about savoring the sweetness of this delicious fruit. Host a watermelon-themed picnic, make some watermelon popsicles, or simply indulge in a slice under the sun to cool off and enjoy the simple pleasures of summer.

August 6: National Root Beer Float Day

Indulge your sweet tooth on National Root Beer Float Day by treating yourself to this classic favorite. The perfect combination of creamy vanilla ice cream and bubbly root beer creates a nostalgic and delightful treat. Whether you prefer it in a tall glass or as a float at your local diner, take a moment to savor the unique flavors that make this dessert so tasty.

This is one of my favorite unusual August holidays! I love a good root beer float on a hot day.

August 9: Book Lovers Day

For those who cherish the written word, Book Lovers Day is your soul day. While avid readers don’t need a specific day to enjoy their books, use this day as an opportunity to inspire a young person to start their own reading journey. Give the child in your life a fun reading pillow and a new book to inspire their love of reading. You can also discuss your current read with friends or gift someone a book that means a lot to you.

August 10: Lazy Day

Everyone deserves a break, and Lazy Day is the perfect excuse to take one. Declare it a pajama day, leave your tasks for tomorrow, and relax in your most comfortable jammies. Sometimes, doing nothing is everything you need to recharge.

August 13: National Left-Handers Day

Left-handers, this day is for you! In a world largely designed for right-handers, today we recognize and celebrate your unique talents and adaptations. Maybe share some of your own “lefty” hacks or fun facts with friends and family.

August 15: National Relaxation Day

Amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life, take a step back and unwind on National Relaxation Day. This day encourages you to prioritize self-care and relaxation, whether through prayer, a spa day, a peaceful nature walk, or simply curling up with a good book. Embrace the calm and tranquility of the day to recharge and rejuvenate your mind and body.

August 16: National Tell a Joke Day

Get ready to tickle your funny bone on National Tell a Joke Day! Whether you’re a seasoned comedian or just love a good laugh, this day is all about sharing humor and spreading joy. Share your favorite jokes with friends and family, watch a comedy special, or attend an open mic night to enjoy the light-hearted spirit of laughter and entertainment. And if you need a joke to share…”Why did the math book look sad? Because it had too many problems!” Enjoy spreading smiles and laughter on National Tell a Joke Day!

August 21: National Senior Citizens Day

On August 21, we celebrate National Senior Citizens Day, a day dedicated to honoring the invaluable contributions of older adults in the United States. Originally proclaimed by President Reagan in 1988, this day serves as a reminder to show appreciation for the wisdom, experience, and influence of seniors in our communities. Whether it’s through a heartfelt gesture, spending time with an elderly loved one, or volunteering at a local senior center, take the opportunity to acknowledge and thank the seniors who have made a positive impact in your life

August 22: National Tooth Fairy Day

Another holiday I never knew existed.  It does stand to reason though that anyone who can sneak into a child’s room, avoid all the toys on the floor, find a tiny tooth under the pillow, and make money magically appear does deserve a special holiday.  Our tooth fairy pillows can help the tooth fairy avoid having to frantically search for that tiny tooth.  So glad I can make the tooth fairy’s job easier!

August 24: National Hug Your Boss Day

This one might be tricky! Not everyone is a hugger, so it’s best to gauge the comfort level before going in for a hug. Perhaps use this day as a chance to show some appreciation in other ways that can make your boss feel valued like a gift from Kidderbug Kreations.

August 27: National Just Because Day

Celebrate spontaneity and whimsy on National Just Because Day, a day dedicated to doing things simply for the joy of it. Whether it’s trying a new hobby, treating yourself to a favorite dessert, or embarking on an unplanned adventure, embrace the freedom to act on impulse and enjoy the little moments that bring happiness for no reason at all.

Explore these and other quirky unusual August holidays to add some extra joy and novelty to your summer. Whether it’s relaxing, celebrating friendships, or just having some fun, these holidays are sure to make your month more interesting.

Make every moment memorable,
